At MYSC, we believe the game is about more than what happens between the lines. As an all-volunteer club led by dedicated volunteer coaches, we are united by a shared commitment to our players and community. Fun, development, fair play, and teamwork are the compass points that guide every training session, every match, and every interaction on and off the field.
Our vision is to play attractive, development focused, and successful soccer, a style that inspires players, families, and the broader community, while building skills, confidence, and friendships that last well beyond the final whistle. We recognize and value the creativity, personality, and experience each coach brings to their team. On Course is not a script or intended to replace individual coaching ideas, but to provide a common framework that aligns us as a club and helps us move forward together.
Through engaging practices and purposeful competition, we create an environment where players learn, grow, and genuinely enjoy the game. We celebrate the beauty of soccer: quick combinations, creative movement, intelligent decision making, and collective effort, where the team is always stronger than the sum of its parts.
By following simple, memorable principles, we establish a shared direction and a recognizable MYSC footprint of soccer on Aquidneck Island. When lived consistently and with our unique club spirit, these guidelines keep us, players, coaches, and families, on course toward meaningful, lasting success.

With our strong development focus, we place a core emphasis on technical skill development. Technical ability is the foundation of soccer development and the starting point for all tactical understanding, confidence, and creativity on the field. A player who is comfortable with the ball will always have more options, make better decisions, and enjoy the game at a higher level. For this reason, our training environment is designed to maximize meaningful interactions with the ball at every age.
One of the core principles of technical skill development is the use of small sided games. The numbers tell the story clearly: a player who trains primarily in 3v3 formats will accumulate nearly five times as many ball touches over their youth career as a player who trains in 9v9 formats. By U16, that difference can amount to over 100,000 additional touches. Every extra touch is another decision, another skill repetition, and another learning moment. This constant contact with the ball accelerates technical quality, builds comfort under pressure, and ensures players are actively engaged instead of waiting for the ball to come to them.
Beyond the numbers, small-sided games recreate the feeling of street soccer, where creativity, quick thinking, and competitiveness thrive. Players are encouraged to take risks, celebrate their successes, and learn from mistakes in real game situations. By maximizing touches and decision-making opportunities, we not only improve technical ability but also foster a style of play that is fluid, confident, and joyful. In today’s sports environment, where unstructured play is rare, small-sided coaching is our way of giving players back that freedom to learn through the game itself.

Another cornerstone of our MYSC philosophy is teamwork and fair play. Soccer is not a game won by individuals but by teams who work together, through assists, supportive runs, and unselfish play. Every success on the field should be celebrated by the entire team, and coaches should encourage players to praise good actions whether it’s a goal, an assist, or a well timed defensive effort. Goal scorers should always acknowledge and thank the teammates who created the opportunity, whether by passing, making space, or drawing defenders away. A simple high-five or word of appreciation reinforces the idea that goals are team achievements.
Equally important is our commitment to fair play. We want our players to be known as physical competitors who play hard, but always within the rules and respect for their teammates, opponents, and referees. Coaches should instill habits such as helping both teammates and opponents up after challenges, and reminding players to apologize for fouls or injuries, even if it means remembering an opponent’s jersey number to do so later. Respect for referees, regardless of their age or experience, is non-negotiable. This culture of teamwork and fairness not only improves the game experience for everyone but also builds players who carry these values beyond the field. At the heart of our program is a simple belief: players must love the game to truly grow in it. Our goal is to instill joy, confidence, and passion for soccer in every player, regardless of current ability, role, or stage of development. When players enjoy coming to training, feel supported, and are encouraged to express themselves, learning accelerates and long-term commitment follows.
Our competitive program is built around long-term development, not short term results. While competition matters, it is never our primary measure of success. Our program directors intentionally place teams in divisions that challenge them appropriately, understanding that growth happens when players are tested, not protected. We believe that meaningful development often comes from adversity, reflection, and learning, far more than from dominating opponents or collecting trophies.
Success in our club is therefore measured by player development, confidence, and understanding of the game, not by goals scored or games won. This philosophy applies across all age groups. A player who takes risks, improves technically, and grows in game awareness is succeeding, even if the scoreboard does not immediately reflect it.
Playing time and positional development are also guided by age appropriate expectations. Our youngest competitive players receive equal playing time, ensuring opportunity, confidence, and a strong foundation. As players progress into older age groups and higher competitive divisions, field time gradually becomes more performance-oriented, preparing them for the realities and expectations of competitive school and higher-level soccer.
Positional freedom follows a similar progression. At 4v4, players are not bound to specific positions, allowing them to experience all aspects of the game. At 7v7, players rotate through roles and responsibilities to build broader understanding. By 9v9, positional structure becomes more defined, and at full-field 11v11, players begin to specialize, applying their strengths within a team framework while understanding the demands of their role.
By keeping joy at the center of competition, we create an environment where players are motivated, resilient, and eager to learn, ensuring they not only develop as soccer players, but continue playing for the love of the game.

At Middletown Youth Soccer Club, our core principle for developing technical skill is simple: the best learning happens through play. That’s why we focus on small sided games, where every player gets more ball touches, more chances to make decisions, and more opportunities to grow. By keeping the game fast, fun, and engaging, players naturally build their technical ability while learning how to read the game.
We also believe that competitiveness and teamwork go hand in hand. Instead of static drills, we turn exercises into game like challenges that inspire players to compete, support their teammates, and push themselves. Every good action, whether it’s a clever pass, a strong defensive effort, or a goal, is celebrated and praised by both coaches and players. This positive environment builds confidence, encourages risk taking, and helps every child develop a true love for the game.

Beyond mastering the technical skills needed to control the ball, our focus is on playing with intent and purpose. We aim to move the ball forward quickly through vertical and diagonal passes that accelerate the game and create scoring opportunities. By recognizing and exploiting the space behind defensive lines, we keep opponents under constant pressure. Our core offensive principles are to play as wide as needed and as deep as possible, stretching the field to open up passing lanes and attacking space. We anticipate, rather than speculate, reading the game, timing our runs, and making decisions that give our team the advantage in every attacking moment.

Modern defending starts with teamwork. At MYSC, our defensive play is built on clear communication, smart organization, and a shared commitment to pressing as a unit. We stay compact, work together to close down space, and adapt to the movement of both the ball and our opponents. Every player understands their role, whether marking tightly near our goal, pressing high to win the ball back, or doubling up to shut down an attack. Our defending is fair but physical, always aiming to regain possession and launch our next attack with purpose.
At this stage, soccer is all about fun and exploration. Kids develop basic ball familiarity and begin to understand the game through playful activities, building confidence and a love for the sport.
At this stage, players continue to explore the game while beginning to develop awareness of teammates and simple decision-making. They work on basic techniques with the ball and start practicing foundational passing, shooting, and moves.
At this stage, players build confidence on the ball while developing awareness of teammates, opponents, and space. This is the core age group for technical skill development. Players improve dribbling, passing, receiving, and shooting while learning to use the inside and outside of both feet and other legal body parts. They begin distinguishing knuckle and finesse shots and develop simple team concepts and decision-making.
At this stage, players refine technical skills while developing stronger tactical awareness and game understanding. With the introduction of 9v9, learning player roles, positioning, and basic tactics becomes more important, and players begin to understand that success comes from team effort. They make quicker decisions under pressure, recognize space, and apply skills more consistently in match situations.
Players combine strong technical ability with growing tactical understanding and physical development. They learn to apply skills at game speed while adapting to full-sided play, increased competition, and more complex team concepts. Players are encouraged to take ownership of their roles, communicate on the field, and understand how individual decisions impact team performance.
Players focus on refining their technical and tactical abilities while embracing higher game intensity and personal responsibility. They are encouraged to play with confidence, leadership, and purpose, understanding how preparation, teamwork, and mindset influence performance. The emphasis shifts toward applying everything they’ve learned in meaningful game situations while fostering a lifelong love for soccer.
As you plan and lead your sessions, we encourage you to make use of technology and coaching apps as valuable tools for training guidelines, practice plans, and team organization and communication. Be sure to select age-appropriate and skill-appropriate drills, with a strong focus on small-sided games that maximize touches for every player.
MYSC fully supports our coaches in continuing their education, whether through coaching licenses, lectures, in-person training, or online learning. The link below will be updated and expanded regularly with online courses, in-person training dates, and a selection of articles we find interesting, particularly those that dive deeper into training methods and football tactics.
Above all, always strive to be encouraging and motivating, creating an environment where players can grow both in skill and confidence. Children may not remember the score at U10, but they will remember the joy of playing and being encouraged.
